Donaghey Primary School
Pearson Cup Qualifiers – Cookstown High School – 23 February 2018
Donaghey PS 1:0 Bush P.S.
In the first match of the group stage Donaghey were drawn against Bush Primary School. This was a tightly fought contest with both goal keepers busy throughout. Donaghey had Jack Evans from P6 playing his first game in goals and he was pleased to keep a clean sheet. Donaghey’s winning goal was scored by Noah Cuddy who rebounded a Edward Irwin shot from the top of the scoring zone.
Donaghey PS 0:0 Windmill P.S.
In the second group match Donaghey played Windmill Primary from Dungannon. Once again this was a very tight game with goal scoring chances at a premium. Charles Acheson went close to breaking the deadlock but the Windmill keeper pulled off a great save. Daniel Brodison had a great game in defence keeping the Windmill forwards at bay.
Donaghey PS 1:0 Coagh P.S.
In the third match of the day Donaghey secured their second win with an excellent result over a talented Coagh Primary School team. This time it was Issac Kelso who showed some great composure to pounce on a deflected shot and slot home past the Coagh Goalie. Once again Donaghey defended very well with Sam Hamill and Harry McQueen playing their part.
Donaghey PS 3:0 Donaghmore P.S.
Donaghey topped their group and were drawn against the 4th placed team in Group A Donaghmore.
This was a comfortable win for the Donaghey boys with lovely goals from Charles Acheson, Issac Kelso and Edward Irwin.
Donaghey PS 1:0 Coagh P.S.
Donaghey were pitched against Coagh Primary in the semi final and they managed to repeat the earlier one nil victory to secure a place in the final. This was a great game with both teams playing their best hockey of the day. The Donaghey goal was scored by Edward Irwin who rocketed home a trademark pile-driver into the Coagh goal. Jack Evans had secured his fifth clean sheet in a row.
Donaghey PS 0:1 Moneymore P.S.
In the final Donaghey fought so hard in attack and defence against a very strong Moneymore team. Moneymore had some very good chances but Jack Evans, Edward Irwin and Daniel Brodison were on hand to clear the danger. Donaghey had their own chances but Moneymore also defended very well. The game finished 0:0 after normal time. In Extra time Donaghey had a very good chance to win the game but the shot went narrowly wide. In the dying minutes with the game looking as if it would go to penalties Moneymore snatched the all important “Golden Goal” to secure victory.
This was a great exhibition of hockey and both schools should be very proud of the sportsmanship illustrated by the two teams.
Donaghey and Moneymore have now qualified for the Northern Ireland finals to be played on the 20 April at the Playball Centre in Belfast.
